Profile: What Makes the Edradour Water Jug Special
The original water jug comes from Edradour, one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, in the Scottish Highlands near Pitlochry. It is printed on both sides and about 14 cm high – a classic accessory for opening up the whisky with a splash of water as you like.
Edradour was founded in 1825 as a cooperative of local farmers, after the Excise Act of 1823 had made legal distilling more attractive. The distillery, in a small valley on either side of the burn that supplies its water, is regarded as the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland still working by hand – it produces only around twelve casks a week. The water comes from the springs of Ben Vrackie. Since 2002 Edradour has belonged to the independent bottler Signatory Vintage, owned by Andrew Symington.
