Portrait: What makes the Glenfarclas 2016/2026 Easter Edition special
The Glenfarclas 2016/2026 Easter Edition is one of those bottlings where you immediately notice that someone has put a lot of thought into it – not just into what's in the bottle, but also into when it will be released. After all, Easter is a time for surprises. Some find colorful eggs in their garden, others suddenly find a strictly limited single malt on their whisky shelf. The latter is clearly the more attractive option for many adults.
The Easter Edition has become a small tradition at Glenfarclas, and the bottling from 2016/2026 is already the third of its kind. The whisky was distilled in 2016 before spending a leisurely ten-year maturation in particularly carefully selected former Oloroso Sherry Casks. These casks, by the way, are not ordinary wooden containers. They are personally selected by John L. S. Grant at the Spanish bodega José y Miguel Martín.
You can think of it as something like a very exclusive cask shopping trip – only with considerably more tradition and considerably fewer shopping carts. The history of Glenfarclas itself dates back to 1836, when the distillery was founded in the Scottish region of Speyside. Since 1865, it has belonged to the Grant family – making it one of the few major Scottish distilleries that are still independent and family-owned.
While other distilleries have changed hands multiple times over the decades, Glenfarclas has remained as constant as a misty Scottish morning. The distillery also adheres to traditions in its technical aspects. To this day, Glenfarclas uses direct-fired stills – a method that seems almost nostalgic in the modern whisky world. The maturing whisky then rests in classic dunnage warehouses, low-ceilinged warehouses with thick stone walls and earthen floors.
There, the casks are stacked comfortably on top of each other and have plenty of time to do their work. And time is a central theme at Glenfarclas. The distillery adheres to its famous "Made to Age" philosophy: whisky is fundamentally produced here in such a way that it can mature for a long time – from young bottlings to venerable 40-year-olds.
The Glenfarclas 2016/2026 Easter Edition is therefore not only a limited special bottling, but also a small piece of this long tradition. Or to put it another way: an Easter bunny who prefers to hide history in a glass instead of chocolate.
