Profile: What Makes Takamaka Overproof Rum Special
The Trois Frères Distillery sits on the historic La Plaine St André estate on Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles. It was founded by the brothers Richard and Bernard d'Offay, who officially opened their distillery in February 2002 after more than a year of testing. The name “Trois Frères” – three brothers – is a tribute to the family business, as their parents have three sons. The Takamaka brand itself is named after a picturesque bay on the island and the local tree of the same name.
Distillation takes place in three copper stills: two pot stills provide flavour and character, a rectifying column the necessary purity. Takamaka Overproof Rum is bottled at 69% ABV and thus keeps the rugged, original charm of Takamaka Rum Blanc – only far more concentrated.
The term “overproof” has its origin in seafaring. According to tradition, the rum carried by the Navy was stored on board together with the gunpowder. If rum casks were damaged, the wet gunpowder was still supposed to ignite – hence the high alcohol content.
Tasting Notes: What Takamaka Overproof Rum Tastes Like
- Nose: Powerful, intensely spicy aromas with the scent of almonds and marzipan; in the background tropical fruit tones of mango and pineapple, plus white peach, cinnamon and something earthy
- Palate: Powerful and very present, with distinct notes of vanilla and caramel and fine tannins behind them; plus fresh grass, anise, white pepper and citrus peel, with a touch of overripe banana
- Finish: Long, spicy and robust, slightly bitter; ripe peach, pineapple and lingering spice echo for a long time
