Profile: What Makes Tomatin 12 Year Old Special
Tomatin 12 Year Old is the house’s core bottling. It first matures in bourbon casks and receives a finish of six to nine months in oloroso sherry casks. The result is a sweet whisky with notes of apple, citrus and sweet spice; the body is medium and very nicely balanced.
The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897 south of Inverness and worked with only two stills until 1958. In the 1970s, with 12.5 million litres a year, it was the largest distillery in Scotland. In 1986 it was rescued by Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co, making it the first Scottish distillery under Japanese control. Today it operates six wash stills and six spirit stills.
Tasting Notes: What Tomatin 12 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Toasted grain and traces of wintry spices such as cardamom and cinnamon, slightly buttery with toasted oak – then dark sugar, malt and a little rum and apple peel; fresh green apple and a hint of milk chocolate
- Palate: Medium body, very nicely balanced – pleasantly sweet with distinct notes of fudge and toffee, the sugar and spices return, plus herbs; fresher and fruitier with lemon and orange peel, then spicy wood notes
- Finish: Medium length with sweet-fruity notes

Wir haben den Whisky von Schotten in Aberdeen empfohlen bekommen.
Aber uns schmeckt der Whisky zu sehr nach den Bourbon Fässern, also etwas arg "amerikanisch". Unsere Leidenschaft liegt aber, und die Whiskys sind halt dann deutlich "anders" im Geschmack, bei den Inseln, die Speyside und dann noch alles was nördlicher liegt. Für uns müsste man vermutlich die Reifzeit in den Fässern tauschen. Ansonsten ist aber die Qualität gut.
