Profile: What Makes Tomatin 12 Year Old Special
Tomatin 12 Year Old is the house’s core bottling. It first matures in bourbon casks and receives a finish of six to nine months in oloroso sherry casks. The result is a sweet whisky with notes of apple, citrus and sweet spice. In the sample it is easy to get to know.
The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897 south of Inverness, came under Japanese control in 1986 as the first Scottish distillery to do so (Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co) and today operates six wash stills and six spirit stills.
Tasting Notes: What Tomatin 12 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Toasted grain and traces of wintry spices such as cardamom and cinnamon, slightly buttery with toasted oak – then dark sugar, malt and a little rum and apple peel
- Palate: Medium body, very nicely balanced – pleasantly sweet with distinct notes of fudge and toffee, the sugar and spices return, plus herbs
- Finish: Medium length with sweet-fruity notes
