Portrait: What makes the Auchentoshan 12 year old special
While many Scottish whiskies come across as sturdy lumberjacks, the Auchentoshan 12 year old is more of the well-groomed type with a tweed jacket, bookcase, and a penchant for jazz records. No wonder - after all, it comes from the Scottish Lowlands, just a stone's throw from Glasgow, making it a classy suburban whisky.
Auchentoshan (pronounced "Ock-un-toschen" - don't despair, even Scots sometimes have to ask) is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that triple-distills its whiskies. While others say "good enough" after two, Auchentoshan goes one step further – for more elegance, more polish, and probably also because they simply can.
The distillery itself has been around since the early 19th century. It has survived wars, recessions, and the occasional bout of Glasgow weather – and today stands like a rock in the Lowland surf, albeit with considerably more style.
The 12-year-old is the brand's flagship – the whisky that politely says "good evening" before pouring itself a glass. Not loud, not wild, but with attitude.
In short: Anyone who thinks a whisky has to blow in your face like a campfire can straighten their collar for a moment.
Auchentoshan shows that understatement can be damn charming.
Tasting Notes: This is what the Auchentoshan 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: Fresh and elegant with aromas of toffee, almonds, and a hint of citrus - behind it, light vanilla, roasted malt, and a subtle floral touch
- Palate: smooth and balanced - caramel and pale malt meet subtle oak spice, roasted nuts, and a hint of orange - the triple distillation ensures a soft, clear impression
- Finish: medium-long, smooth, and slightly dry - some sweetness lingers, accompanied by delicate oak notes and a hint of chocolate
