In November 2023, a single bottle of Macallan 1926 - matured for 60 years in sherry casks, one of only 40 ever bottled - changed hands at a London auction for the equivalent of around €2.5 million, setting a new world record for the most expensive whisky bottle ever sold. Sums like these are extreme outliers, but they show how the market for well-aged collector's whisky has developed over the past two decades: from a niche hobby for enthusiasts into a serious investment asset. The longer a whisky matures in the cask, the more colour, depth of flavour and complexity it absorbs - a first-fill cask releases colour and flavour noticeably faster than one that has already been used several times. How realistic is the €2.5 million record price for everyday collecting?
Completely unrealistic for ordinary collectors - the auctioned Macallan 1926 bottle was one of only 40 ever produced and thus an absolute exception. It does, however, illustrate the broader trend: scarcity and age drive value.
What's the difference between first-fill and refill casks?
A first-fill cask has not previously been used for whisky (usually former sherry or bourbon casks) and therefore releases colour and flavour noticeably faster and more intensely than a refill cask that has already been used several times.
