Portrait: What makes the Bushmills 21 year old special.
There are whiskeys that want to stand out. And then there's the Bushmills 21 year old – a gentleman in liquid form. No fuss, no gold chain, no "Look, I'm 21!" – this Irishman knows that true class doesn't shout, but greets with a subtle nod.
The Old Bushmills Distillery is located in picturesque Northern Ireland, more precisely in the small town of Bushmills – yes, the whiskey actually shares the name of the place, which saves time Googling. The whole thing was officially founded in 1608, making Bushmills the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. While witches were still being burned in other parts of Europe, in Northern Ireland, proper distilling was already taking place – whiskey, of course.
The 21-year-old Bushmills is, so to speak, the house's senior citizen version: mature, deeply relaxed, and with an impressive resume. It was allowed to rest in various barrels for a full 21 years – which, in whiskey terms, roughly corresponds to the level of "Zen Master with a diploma."
And while other whiskeys might show off their tattoos and peat smells, Bushmills 21 Year Old simply leans back, crosses its legs, and says in its best Irish accent: "Sláinte, my friend – sit down, tell me something."
In short: whoever drinks this whiskey isn't getting a party drink in their glass – but a calm, worldly storyteller with 400 years of experience. And sometimes that's exactly what you need.
Bushmills 21 year old is a whiskey for quiet moments, revealing more of its maturity and complexity with every sip. A true delight for connoisseurs.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Bushmills 21 year old tastes like
- Nose: complex and noble - ripe dark fruits such as figs and raisins first greet the nose, followed by nutty aromas, old wood, and a hint of toffee - plus an elegant veil of sherry and port wine influences - warm, deep, and inviting
- Palate: soft, round, and wonderfully complex - dried fruits, oak, a hint of dark chocolate, and a touch of spice - all perfectly balanced - the long maturation period brings depth and elegance, without sharpness or exaggeration - the whiskey presents itself with dignity - with substance
- Finish: long, warm, and velvety - oak, fine sweetness, a hint of tobacco, and a hint of dried fruit linger pleasantly - a finish that doesn't want to go away - and honestly, it doesn't should
