Portrait: What makes the Glenfarclas 40 year old special

Some things in life simply get better with time: cheese, friendships - and Scottish whisky. Anyone who patiently spends 40 years in a cask can rightly call themselves a gentleman of the art of distilling. Or as Glenfarclas 40 Years, presented here quite modestly in the handbag-friendly 0.05-liter edition – a mini-me version of whiskeys, so to speak, but with the maturity of a Highland veteran.

The Glenfarclas distillery, which roughly translates as "valley of green grass," is idyllically situated in Speyside – and has been since 1836. For six generations, the family business has been distilling whiskeys without any frills, but with plenty of pride and even more experience. Glenfarclas is something like the cozy grandfather of distilleries: down-to-earth, tradition-conscious, and always up for a good story.

And this 40-year-old? It has more life experience in its bottle than many connoisseurs who drink it. It has waited four decades in oak barrels for its big moment – and is then bottled in exactly 50ml. A bit like stuffing an entire orchestra into a teapot.

But that's precisely what makes it so charming: This mini bottle contains a piece of whisky history to sample, give as a gift, or simply enjoy on its own. And let's be honest: Who wouldn't want to have a 40-year-old in their glass that's kept its shape?

Conclusion: Small in size, big in character – Glenfarclas shows that true greatness isn't measured in liters.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glenfarclas 40 year old tastes like

  • Nose: Complex and deep – a classic sherry character with ripe dried fruits, raisins, dates, and figs. These are accompanied by hints of old leather, polished wood, walnuts, and a whiff of cigar box. A delicately spicy touch of cinnamon and nutmeg rounds out the opulent aroma.
  • Palate: Smooth, oily, and wonderfully balanced – sweet dark fruits, toffee, and a pleasant oak note dance on the tongue. Gentle spices – especially cinnamon, clove, and a touch of pepper – add depth without dominating. The long maturation period is reflected in a harmonious interplay of sweetness, wood, and spice.
  • Finish: Long, elegant, and warming – the sherry influence remains present, accompanied by a gentle bitterness of dark chocolate and a dry, nutty note. A touch of tobacco and fine wood lingers long after the last sip.
