Profile: What Makes Jura Red Wine Cask Finish Special
This bottling comes from Jura’s Cask Edition and was finished in former red wine casks. The single malt first matured in former bourbon casks of American white oak, then received a second maturation in selected red wine casks, which give it a distinct berry tone.
The Isle of Jura Distillery is in Craighouse, the island’s only village. The first legal distillery was founded here in 1810; after its closure in 1901 it was rebuilt in 1963 to counter the island’s population decline. Since 1993 it has belonged to Whyte & Mackay. Fewer than 300 people live on the island.
Tasting Notes: What Jura Red Wine Cask Finish Tastes Like
- Nose: Caramel and toffee at first – then raisins and sultanas, paired with cherries and mild honey
- Palate: Mouth-filling and robust – distinct creamy vanilla and ground cinnamon – behind them fruity notes of ripe strawberries and raspberries
