Profile: What Makes Glen Moray 12 Year Old Special
Glen Moray in Elgin began life as the West Brewery, a brewery run by Robert Thorne & Sons, which was converted into a whisky distillery with two stills in 1897. The first spirit ran from the stills on 13 September 1897. The distillery closed in 1910, was bought in the 1920s by Macdonald & Muir, the company that also owned Glenmorangie, and went to La Martiniquaise in 2008, to which it still belongs today.
The 12 year old is the house’s classic bottling: matured in casks made of American white oak, which give the whisky its soft toffee, vanilla and sweet fruit. Here it comes in the 1.0 litre bottle at 48% ABV – non-chill filtered, so the aromas are retained.
On the nose a rich, fruity-floral sweetness beckons with ripe berries and freshly cut herbs; on the palate the classic Speysider shows itself with delicate sweetness, summer fruits and toasted oak.
