Takamaka
With no access to professional distilling equipment, Bernard d'Offay and his father Robert simply turned their own swimming pool into an improvised cooling tower to develop their first rum recipes - inspired by Robert's father, René Michel d'Offay. In 2002, the two of them, together with Bernard's older brother Richard, finally founded the Trois Frères distillery in the Seychelles, making Takamaka - named after a popular island beach - the country's first and, to this day, only commercial rum producer. Production takes place on the historic La Plaine St. André estate, which served as a spice plantation for vanilla and cinnamon from 1792 before becoming home to the distillery.

Why did the d'Offay family start with a swimming pool instead of a distillery?
With no start-up capital for professional distilling equipment, Bernard and Robert d'Offay initially improvised using their own pool as a cooling system, before founding the proper Trois Frères distillery with Bernard's brother Richard in 2002.
Why is Takamaka the only rum producer in the Seychelles?
Until Trois Frères was founded in 2002, there was no commercial rum production in the Seychelles at all - Takamaka remains the country's only producer to this day, using exclusively locally grown sugar cane and water.

Taste: Clean and pure for the white rum, with tropical freshness; the flavoured variants use local ingredients such as coconut, vanilla and lime.
Recommended enjoyment: The Rum Blanc works excellently in a refreshing Ti-Punch, while aged bottlings are best enjoyed neat.
