Dutch rum enthusiast Jacco Kroon was inspired by this story in 2016 to create the Navy Island brand.
Contrary to what the name suggests, the rum is not actually produced on the island itself, but distilled using the traditional pot-still method at renowned Jamaican heritage distilleries such as Hampden Estate, Worthy Park, and Monymusk. How did Navy Island get its name?
Navy Island is a small, tropical island off Port Antonio on Jamaica's north coast. It got its name from the British Royal Navy, which used it as a base in the 18th century. The island became world-famous only in the 1940s, however, when Hollywood actor Errol Flynn won it in a poker game and subsequently developed it into an exclusive retreat.
Where does the rum actually come from?
In 2016, Dutch rum connoisseur Jacco Kroon founded the Navy Island brand, inspired by this island's story. The rum itself, however, is not distilled on Navy Island, but produced at established Jamaican heritage distilleries such as Hampden Estate, Worthy Park, and Monymusk using the characteristic pot-still method, then selected and blended according to Kroon's recipe. The rums mature for varying lengths of time in oak casks and are bottled without added sugar or colouring.
