Portrait: What makes the Glen Scotia 7 year old Medium Peated Ruby Port Finish Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 special

When the first rays of sunshine creep over the Scottish Kintyre peninsula in spring, a very special time of year begins in the small coastal town of Campbeltown: the Campbeltown Malts Festival. Whisky enthusiasts from all over the world flock to the former "Victorian whisky capital of the world," where over 30 distilleries used to operate. Today, only a few remain – but those that do are full of character. One of them is the venerable Glen Scotia distillery.
The distillery was founded back in 1832 and has experienced its fair share of ups and downs throughout its long history. While other distilleries disappeared, Glen Scotia persevered stoically – perhaps because the Campbeltown winds and sea air foster a certain stubbornness.
Today, the distillery is one of the guardians of the typical Campbeltown style: maritime, powerful, and a bit eccentric – just like the town itself. For the 2026 festival, Glen Scotia has prepared a special bottling: a 7-year-old single malt with the evocative name "Medium Peated Ruby Port Finish." It sounds a bit like the title of an indie album, but it's actually a strictly limited festival edition. And “limited” is meant seriously here - after all, Glen Scotia only produces peated barley for about four weeks a year.
You could say: This whisky has a busier schedule than some pop stars.

The base of the whisky initially matured for seven years in first-fill bourbon casks, before receiving a final maturation of approximately six months in ruby port casks. The whole thing was bottled, of course, at cask strength with a robust 53.9% ABV, without chill filtration and in its natural color – essentially whisky in "nature-created" mode. The Festival bottling combines several things that whisky fans love: Campbeltown tradition, a rare peated production, and the festive occasion of one of Scotland's most charming whisky events. Or, to put it another way: This whisky is a bit like the festival itself – rare, full of character, and definitely worth the trip.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glen Scotia 7 year old Medium Peated Ruby Port Finish Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 tastes like

  • Nose: Sweet peat smoke opens the bouquet and combines with ripe red cherries. Creamy aromas of vanilla fudge add a soft, seductive depth to the fragrance.

  • Palate: On the palate, a juicy freshness of mandarin orange is initially apparent. This is followed by rich hints of blackcurrant jam, accompanied by multi-layered, warm smoky notes reminiscent of smoldering peat embers.
  • Finish: The aftertaste is warming and spicy with cinnamon and clove. A maritime salinity emerges, while lingering peat smoke slowly fades away.
