Portrait: What makes the Glen Scotia Vintage 2011 - Saga - Release No. 1 - What makes Whiskyopolis special

Anyone who has known Glen Scotia for a while knows: This distillery from Campbeltown is something like the charming, slightly rebellious uncle of the Scottish whisky world – steeped in history, a little mysterious, and never at a loss for a striking appearance.
When Glen Scotia was founded in 1832, Campbeltown wasn't just any port town. No, it was right in the middle of Scottish whisky fever, and the town fully deserved its nickname "Whiskyopolis". A whopping 37 distilleries produced so much spirit back then that people were said to occasionally wonder whether they were actually seeing water or whisky in the harbor. Official accounts are lacking – but we have our suspicions. With the new series "Campbeltown Saga," Glen Scotia is now retelling this very era – with a wink and a healthy dose of pride.
The series is intended as a tribute to those times when the air in Campbeltown was supposedly so peaty that you could almost save a dram by breathing it in. And who better to carry on this story than Glen Scotia itself – one of the last three active distilleries in the former whisky capital? For Release No. 1, Iain McAlister, the man with an inexhaustible sense of tradition and timing, delved deep into the barrel cellars and selected the rare medium-peated first-fill bourbon barrels.
What's so special about it? Glen Scotia only produces the peated spirit for one month of the year - making this bottling as rare as sunshine in the West Highlands. The Vintage 2011 is not just a look back, but also a statement: non-chill filtered, natural color, and deliberately unadulterated.
A limited edition that doesn't try to imitate the past, but to continue its story – modern, bold, and with the typical Campbeltown character that captivated the world back then.

In short: a liquid history lesson that you'll be proud to have on your shelf – and perhaps in your glass as well.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glen Scotia Vintage 2011 - Saga - Release No. 1 - Whiskyopolis tastes like

  • Nose: Warm peat smoke aromas immediately rise to the nose and intertwine with fresh impressions of green apples and a hint of grilled pineapple. In the background, creamy vanilla and sweet, lightly caramelized brown sugar emerge, creating a rich, yet maritime-tinged, aromatic tapestry.
  • Palate: Initially, a harmonious blend of smoke and fruit is evident, before a lively citrus impulse of zesty lemon brightens the character. This freshness gently transitions into a coastal minerality, accompanied by notes of salted caramel that elegantly envelop the spicy smoke.
  • Finish: Medium to long, characterized by lingering smoky notes and warm, ember-like aromas. Maritime notes and a subtle sweetness linger, while the salty caramel note slowly fades, providing a pleasantly rounded finish.
