Portrait: What makes the Planteray Barbados XO special
They say good things take time. If that's true, then the Plantation Barbados XO 20th Anniversary is the most patient gentleman in the Caribbean. Born on Barbados, the island where the wind always smells of vacation and sugarcane practically dances by itself, this rum has spent more time in Casks than many people in their favorite office. Its résumé is impressive: First, it is distilled at the venerable West Indies Rum Distillery – where molasses has been transformed into liquid legends since 1893. After a leisurely fermentation of three to five days (enough time to develop at its own pace - or to read a good book), the young rum is transferred to ex-bourbon Casks and remains there for eight to fifteen years. In the Caribbean, this isn't called aging, but rather a well-deserved vacation.
But then things get serious: The journey continues to France, to the venerable Château de Bonbonnet in Cognac. There, far from palm trees and parrots, it is stored again - this time in new white oak Casks, old bourbon Casks , and Ferrand cognac Casks, all toasted to varying degrees. This process is called Double Ageing - doubly matured, doubly charming, doubly difficult to explain at a party.
With a dosage of 19 grams per liter, it also has a penchant for the sweeter side of life. And while other rums simply age, this one is cultivated. The result is not just a drink, but a piece of Caribbean-French diplomacy in a bottle - with plenty of history, even more patience, and a wink to all those who believe you can't drink time.
A solid, well-balanced Barbados rum with a classic character and a fine balance between fruit, wood, and sweetness.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Planteray Barbados XO tastes like
- Nose: Robust and aromatic with distinct aromas of coconut, banana, and vanilla. These are complemented by toasted wood notes and a hint of spice cake. Overall, a clear, balanced aroma reminiscent of ripe fruit and light roasted notes.
- Palate: On the palate, round and harmonious, with a good balance between sweetness and spice. Initially, cinnamon-sweet notes emerge, followed by vanilla, toast, and toasted coconut. Then, ripe bananas, candied fruit, and a touch of honey come to the fore. The overall impression is full-bodied yet pleasantly approachable.
- Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering hints of vanilla, spices, and sugarcane. The sweet and spicy impressions remain perceptible and fade slowly without becoming heavy.
