Profile: What Makes Tomatin Cask Strength Special
Tomatin’s cask strength bottling matures in selected first-fill ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks and joined the core range in early 2015 as its first cask strength release.
The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897 as Tomatin Spey Distillery Co Ltd south of Inverness and worked with only two stills until 1958. In the 1970s, with 12.5 million litres a year, it was the largest distillery in Scotland. In 1986 it was rescued by Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co, making it the first Scottish distillery under Japanese control. Today it operates six wash stills and six spirit stills.
Tasting Notes: What Tomatin Cask Strength Tastes Like
- Nose: Golden syrup and fresh ginger biscuits, distinct nuts behind them; orange, lemon and pear
- Palate: Malty, with notes of marzipan, almonds and vanilla; malt loaf, huge, drying nutty oloroso notes, firm leather, candied fruit in dark chocolate and tingling spices such as cinnamon hearts, candied ginger and clove
- Finish: Dry and soft, with spicy hints; a long, lingering spiciness

Kommentar: das polierte Leder findet man mit der Nase im Glas wenn dieses nach dem trinken 1-2h steht. Unverdünnt ist der Alkohol ziemlich scharf an der Zunge, dadurch hat man aber eine geniale Explosion im Mund. Mit etwas Wasser wird er sehr angenehm und verliert keineswegs an Charme.
