Portrait: What makes the Deveron 12 year old special
The single malt whisky The Deveron 12 Year Old is a good example of how a name change can sometimes feel more like déjà vu than a new beginning. Formerly known as Glen Deveron, the whisky is now simply available as The Deveron – which sounds less like an identity crisis and more like a streamlined label and renewed confidence.
The contents, however, remain refreshingly down-to-earth. Its home is the Macduff Distillery, located in northeast Scotland, not far from the coast and in close proximity to the River Deveron, from which the whisky takes its name. Founded in 1962, the distillery is one of the quieter players in the Scottish whisky world: little limelight, plenty of substance.
Macduff has always produced single malt, but for a long time was primarily used for blends – a classic fate for many distilleries that prefer delivery to ostentation. With the return of the name The Deveron, single malt is once again taking center stage.
The 12-year-old expression represents continuity rather than revolution. No wild experiments, no trendy cask acrobatics, but a whisky that demonstrates that patience and time are still compelling arguments. Its clear positioning as a single malt today is less a trend than long-overdue recognition.
Historically, The Deveron straddles whisky regions: geographically often considered part of the Highlands, stylistically close to Speyside – making it a border crosser, entirely free of identity pressure. Perhaps that's exactly what fits his story: long known, then almost forgotten, now back again - with a slightly altered name, but familiar origins.
The Deveron 12 year old is not a loud storyteller. He doesn't push himself forward, doesn't wave superlatives, and avoids grand gestures. Instead, he sits quietly on the shelf and seems to say, "I've always been here." And sometimes, that's precisely the best story a whisky can tell.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Deveron 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: Initially soft and creamy with pronounced aromas of smooth butterscotch. With time, increasingly spicy aromas develop, giving the scent more depth and structure.
- Palate: Sweet and creamy on the palate, again dominated by butterscotch. This is accompanied by vanilla, soft oak notes, and a subtle, restrained fruitiness that provides additional balance.
- Finish: Dry yet pleasantly smooth, with a harmonious finish without any harshness.

Für einen 12 Jährigen fast geschenkt.
Sehr weich, wohl auch wegen dem niedrigen Alkoholgehalt.
Aber auch hier ohne Farbstoffe.
Ihn zu kaufen ist kein Fehler.
