Formerly known as Glen Deveron, the whisky is now simply available as The Deveron – which sounds less like an identity crisis and more like a streamlined label and renewed confidence.
The contents, however, remain refreshingly down-to-earth. Its home is the Macduff Distillery, located in northeast Scotland, not far from the coast and in close proximity to the River Deveron, from which the whisky takes its name. Founded in 1962, the distillery is one of the quieter players in the Scottish whisky world: little limelight, plenty of substance.
Macduff has always produced single malt, but for a long time was primarily used for blends – a classic fate for many distilleries that prefer delivery to ostentation. With the return of the name The Deveron, single malt is once again taking center stage.
