Portrait: What makes the Glen Moray Peated special

The Glen Moray Peated is a single malt Scotch whisky that doesn't loudly push itself to the forefront - more like that one friend who initially stands quietly in the corner at a party and then suddenly surprised with the most interesting story of the evening.
But before the bottle is even opened, it's worth taking a look at the origins of this Scottish dram. The roots of the Glen Moray brand go back to 1897, when a former brewery in the small town of Elgin in the Speyside region was quickly converted into a whisky distillery. Apparently, the thinking at the time was: "Beer is good, but whisky would be even better." A decision that can certainly be described as extremely successful today.
For over a century, distillation has been carried out there with great patience and a keen sense of tradition. The distillery has earned a reputation for producing high-quality single malts without being overly formal. In other words, Glen Moray is a bit like that friendly neighbor who also happens to have a talent for making excellent whisky. The distillery itself is idyllically situated on the River Lossie, whose water has played an important role in production for generations.
So you could say that a little piece of the Scottish landscape goes right into the bottle – no hiking boots or raincoat required. Today, the brand belongs to the French spirits group La Martiniquaise, which shows that good whisky can also forge international friendships.
Despite this global connection, however, production remains firmly rooted in Scotland. The Glen Moray Peated represents an exciting side of the distillery: a style that shows Speyside isn't just known for classic whiskies, but also enjoys exploring new avenues.
It's a bit like a traditional Scotsman suddenly appearing in sunglasses and a leather jacket – unexpected, but undeniably charming. Each bottle tells a story not only of craftsmanship and history, but also of the relaxed Scottish art of simply doing things well – ideally with plenty of time, experience, and a good dose of character.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glen Moray Peated tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, a pleasant combination of soft vanilla and gentle peat aromas emerges, harmonizing beautifully. An intriguing sweet-bitter nuance of rhubarb joins the mix, lending the aroma a slightly fruity freshness. A subtle hint of old leather lingers in the background, giving the aroma a warm, slightly rustic depth.
  • Palate: On the palate, the peat smoke becomes significantly more pronounced and dominates the initial impression. The vanilla remains clearly discernible, providing a pleasant balance. This is complemented by a light fruitiness, adding another dimension to the whisky and rounding off the interplay of aromas.
  • Finish: The finish is long and sweet-spicy. The vanilla notes and peat, in particular, linger for quite some time, creating a harmonious and lasting impression.

Spysider sollten bei ihrer Tradition bleiben, Peatet gehört nicht dazu.
