Profile: What Makes Ballechin 10 Year Old Special
Since 2003 Edradour has been producing a heavily peated single malt whisky under the name of the old Ballechin distillery. This is the first 10 year old Ballechin with a phenol content of 50 ppm, matured in ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks – a single malt with a powerful smoke and peat note.
The old Ballechin distillery was one of seven original farm distilleries in Perthshire and operated from 1810 to 1927. It dried its malt mostly over peat fires; Alfred Barnard, who catalogued the distilleries of Britain in the 1880s, mentioned its peated whisky. Of the seven original distilleries only Edradour is left today, the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland.
Tasting Notes: What Ballechin 10 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Earthy peat and fragrant spices, plus old leather and a hint of toffee; a pine forest note and freshly cut peat, with time sweeter candy floss notes
- Palate: At first very fruity peat, then fresh leather, aniseed and dark chocolate; intense notes of dark fruit, vanilla and oak
- Finish: Lingering fruity peat; herbal syrup with dry cigar smoke at the end

Dieser 10jährige gehört für mich zur Grundausstattung meiner Sammlung. Immer wieder gerne, da dieser Whisky neben der kräftigen Rauchnoten einen süßen Anklang hat. Auch der Toffeegeschmack im Hintergrund gefällt mir. Daher ist er eine sehr gute Alternative für einen torfigen, süßen Tagesausklang.
