Portrait: What makes the Hazelburn 10 year old special

The Hazelburn 10 year old is something like the quiet gentleman from Campbeltown. While other whiskies loudly boast about smoke, cask strength, or exotic maturation, Hazelburn politely clears its throat and says: "I'm simply well-made." And with good reason, because it comes from the legendary Springbank Distillery – a distillery known for making pretty much everything in-house that you can, without actually growing the barley in your own backyard. Although: you wouldn't put it past them. Hazelburn is one of three brands produced under the Springbank roof. While Springbank itself stands for tradition with a touch of smoke, and Longrow for considerably more, Hazelburn is the unpeated version.
t's named after a historic distillery in Campbeltown that has long since disappeared – giving it a pleasantly nostalgic feel. Campbeltown itself is one of Scotland's smallest whisky regions, but it boasts an impressively rich history. There used to be over 30 distilleries here; today, only a few remain. Quality over quantity, one might say.
The Hazelburn 10 year old is triple distilled, which in Scotland is about as rare as guaranteed sunshine. This extra distillation makes it a behind-the-scenes perfectionist: meticulous, precise, and a little proud of doing things differently from most of its peers. Even in maturation, they rely on classic storage methods and patience rather than trendy experiments. Typical of Springbank is their uncompromising approach to production. Bottling is done without chill filtration and without added colorings – not as a matter of principle, but out of conviction.
This is less about marketing and more about craftsmanship that has been cultivated for generations. Hazelburn 10 Year Old is therefore not a whisky for grand gestures, but for quiet appreciation. One that doesn't need explaining, but simply exists. Unassuming, steeped in tradition, and pleasantly down-to-earth – like Campbeltown itself. Or to put it another way: If whiskies had character, Hazelburn would probably be punctual, wear good shoes, and never talk about itself unless asked.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Hazelburn 10 year old tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, aromas of stewed pears and baked apples emerge first. These are followed by sweet notes of honey and fudge, which lend the aroma a warm, inviting depth.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whisky is rich and full-bodied. Distinct notes of vanilla and honey take center stage, before hints of licorice unfold. A fresh nuance provides balance and revitalizes the overall impression.
  • Finish: The finish is creamy and smooth, with clear hints of milk chocolate. The mouthfeel remains oily and creamy, with a long and pleasant aftertaste.

Sehr angenehmer Geschmack, insgesamt nach Toffee, Zitrus. Alkohol nicht vordergründig. Etwas nach Holz, leicht und nicht rauchig. Insgesamt sehr angenehm und rund.
