Profile: What Makes El Ron Prohibido Reserva 12 Year Old Special
According to tradition, the “forbidden rum” got its name as early as the early 18th century: the Spanish conquered the New World in South America and brought native products home – including Spanish sherry in casks. On the return voyage to Spain, these casks were filled with freshly distilled rum, called Chinguirito or Habanero, named after the last stop of the sea voyage in Havana, Cuba. During the crossing the rum matured in the sherry casks into a sweet, fruity rum that became very popular in Spain. Spanish wine and sherry producers saw their livelihood threatened and persuaded the Spanish king to ban the Habanero.
El Ron Prohibido continues this tradition: it is made using the solera process and thus matures for over 12 years in oak casks that previously held sherry. In the solera process rums of different levels of maturity are brought together – so the rum combines the power of youth with the complexity of the oldest. Finally it is rounded off with a touch of raisin wine.
The result is a soft, full-bodied rum with a sweet, fruity and spicy character reminiscent of sherry, grapes and molasses.

- Nose: Sweet notes of anise and rose, plus fruity aromas of apple, raisins and plums as well as sultanas, dried fruit, vanilla and chocolate with fine wood nuances
- Palate: Full-bodied and velvety with caramel, honey, roasted nuts, dried fruit and a sweetness like sweet wine; a silky balance of delicate lemon and the sweetness of sugar cane, plus cask, coffee and a lightly smoky, burnt edge
