Portrait: What makes the Tomatin Legacy special
Nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, a good distance south of Inverness, lies the Tomatin Distillery - idyllic, weather-beaten, and with enough fresh air to allow entire rows of casks to breathe deeply. Here, the single malt Tomatin Legacy is created, whose name already reveals: It's about legacy. Sounds grand? It is – but in a pleasantly down-to-earth Highland way. The distillery was founded in 1897, although illegal distilling was supposedly taking place in the area much earlier.
So you could say: The people around Tomatin have always had a certain "entrepreneurial creativity". In the 20th century, the distillery temporarily grew to become Scotland's largest producer of malt whisky – a real powerhouse in wellington boots. One special feature: In 1986, Tomatin was acquired by the Japanese Takara Shuzo Group. This made it one of the first Scottish distilleries to be Japanese-owned. A connection that shows that good ideas know no borders – especially when it comes to whisky.
The Tomatin Legacy sees itself as an approachable ambassador of the distillery. It doesn't bear an age statement on the label, which sometimes raises eyebrows in the whisky world. But "Legacy" here means more about passing on tradition without being limited by numbers.
A bit like someone who keeps their birth year a secret but makes up for it with an excellent life story. The distillery itself was closely linked to the surrounding village for decades. Many employees lived on-site in distillery houses - practically a small whisky neighborhood where the commute took a maximum of three minutes and presumably everyone knew each other. Industry with a family connection.
Today, Tomatin Legacy stands for Highland tradition with an international twist, for history without the dust, and for the wonderful feeling that "legacy" doesn't have to be stuffy – but rather something passed on with a twinkle in your eye.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Tomatin Legacy tastes like
- Nose: Distinct vanilla aromas open the bouquet, accompanied by fresh pineapple and a playful sweetness reminiscent of marshmallows. Bright citrus fruits provide freshness before the aroma develops into a well-rounded impression of juicy fruit compote.
- Palate: On the palate, ground pepper with a pleasant spiciness is initially apparent. The pineapple reappears, complemented by a sweet, malty barley note. A warming oak note lends structure and depth.
- Finish: The finish is sweet and balanced, carried by a fine, lingering peppery note.

Mir leider etwas zu unspannend im Geschmack.
Ohne große Ecken, Kanten und feinen Nuancen.
