Portrait: What makes the Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish special.
When you think of great whisky nations, Taiwan doesn't usually rank first. Or second. Or fifth. And that's precisely what makes Kavalan so exciting – because while many are still wondering whether whisky is even allowed in a subtropical climate, Kavalan has long been a world-class player.
The Concertmaster Port Cask Finish is, so to speak, the charming conductor of the Kavalan range. With its chic green bottle and a name that sounds like a philharmonic orchestra, it almost seems as if it could whistle Bach backward.
Kavalan comes from Yilan, a region east of Taipei, where the air is humid, the climate is hot, and the aging process is rapid. Instead of a leisurely "let's age it for 15 years" approach, the focus here is on tropical aging with turbo effect. This ensures depth – and envious glances from Scotland.
Since 2005, the Kavalan distillery has been producing as much as it can. The stills come from Scotland, the spring water from the Snow Mountains, and the passion seemingly straight from the heart of Taiwan.
The Concertmaster is a prime example of how Kavalan rethinks tradition: Asian precision meets Scottish spirit – in what is probably the most elegant interpretation of a cask finish ever to come from the Far East.
In short: Anyone who believes good whisky only comes from Scotland hasn't yet passed the baton to Kavalan.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish tastes like
- Nose: fruity and lively with aromas of red berries, tropical fruits, and a hint of vanilla - underlying fine oak aromas and a hint of caramel
- Palate: soft and round with sweet port wine notes, complemented by dark fruits such as plums and raisins - a trace of honey, malt, and delicate oak spice provides complexity
- Finish: medium to long, pleasantly warming - fruity sweetness remains, accompanied by a subtle tannin structure and gentle wood notes
