Portrait: What makes the Ledaig 10 year old special

The Ledaig 10 year old is something like the wild cousin from the Scottish island branch of the whisky family - a bit rougher, a bit more idiosyncratic, But that's precisely why it's unforgettable. Its home is on the Isle of Mull, where the weather often does what it wants, and the scenery is so dramatic that even postcards would be envious.
Ledaig is produced at the Tobermory Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, founded in 1798. And this is where it gets interesting: The distillery has a kind of double life. The unpeated single malt is simply called Tobermory.
And then there's Ledaig (pronounced "Lee-chig," in case you don't want to break out in a sweat when ordering), which shows the decidedly rougher side of the operation. The name "Ledaig" itself comes from Gaelic and means something like "safe haven."
Which is a bit ironic, because this whisky seems more like someone who occasionally leaves the harbor to have a little adventure. Perhaps with slightly tousled hair and a good story in tow. The revival of the Ledaig brand is, incidentally, a fine example of how old traditions in the whisky world don't simply disappear, but eventually make a comeback—often with even more character than before.
While many distilleries strictly adhere to one style, Tobermory indulges in this exciting contrast between smooth and peaty. The Ledaig 10 year old represents the powerful, original side of the island. Ten years of maturation give it ample opportunity to develop – and probably also to gather a few good island tales.
In short: Ledaig isn't a whisky that sits prettily on the shelf, waiting to be admired. It's more the type that's already out there in the wind, shouting: "Come on, this is going to be interesting!"

Tasting Notes: This is how the Ledaig 10 year old tastes like

  • Nose: Light and very balanced on the nose, characterized by soft peat aromas and an elegant smoky nuance. Hints of malt and nuts are also present, accompanied by a touch of dried fruit.

  • Palate: Rich and spicy on the palate with distinct notes of charred oak and peat. Earthy notes combine with a subtle spiciness of black pepper.

  • Finish: Medium-long and pleasantly present. Spicy impressions linger, while the smoke gently fades, rounding out the overall impression.

Mein Lieblingswhisky. Klare, gut ausgeprägte Torfnote, schöner Abgang. Ein Whisky ohne Schnörkel.
