Portrait: What makes the Edradour 12 year old Caledonia Selection special

Welcome to Pitlochry, the small town in the Scottish The Highlands, which has more sheep than inhabitants – and is home to one of the most charming distilleries in the country: Edradour. Small but mighty, is the motto here – because Edradour is considered one of the smallest traditional distilleries in Scotland. In a world full of fully automated monster distilleries, this is almost a romantic act of resistance. Here, work is still done by hand as if there were no tomorrow. Or at least no Wi-Fi.

The Edradour 12 year old Caledonia Selection is something like patriotism in whisky – in liquid form. It is named after the song "Caledonia" by Dougie MacLean, a Scottish singer-songwriter who wrote the piece in 1977 while homesick for Scotland – probably because he didn't have any whisky on hand. The ballad became the secret national anthem of the Scots, and the collaboration between MacLean and Edradour became a tribute to a country that has more history, myths, and mists than an entire season finale of Outlander.

By the way: Dougie MacLean personally helped decide which whisky goes into this bottle—a kind of liquid playlist, only with more alcohol and less Spotify.

Whether as a gift, a collector's item, or a comforter on rainy days—the Edradour Caledonia is no ordinary drop, but a little piece of Scotland in bottle form. With musical blessing. And presumably the background noise of bagpipes during bottling.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour 12 year old Caledonia Selection tastes like

  • Nose: Robust, sweet, and spicy at the same time - the first impression is a warm welcome from the Highlands - dried fruits such as raisins and figs mingle with aromas of dark chocolate, sherry, and a hint of cinnamon - behind this lurk slightly nutty tones and a subtle hint of orange marmalade - All in all: like Christmas with a cask stave
  • Palate: Full-bodied, round, and intense - the influence of the sherry casks is immediately present - rich notes of dried fruits, dates, and sweet wood dance across the tongue - this is joined by an elegant spiciness, accompanied by toffee, dark honey, and a slightly malty character - with some time in the glass, subtle herbal notes also emerge and a hint of dark berries - complex, yet approachable - like a Highlander in a tailored suit
  • Finish: long, warming, and pleasantly dry - the sherry sweetness fades slowly, leaving behind an elegant blend of oak spice, cocoa, and a delicate hint of licorice - a hint of espresso lingers - as if Scotland itself were waving goodbye

a delicious malt - I've bought three so far and will certainly buy. distinct plum, sour apple nose. Rich, complex taste, candied apple, cinnamon, peppermint with a hint of dark chocolate ? banana crème pie, cappuccino. a bit of soap in the aftertaste

Ein typischer Edradour mit sehr viel Toffee und Cremigkeit. Langer und weicher Abgang mit Anklang von Eierlikör. Nicht unbedingt ein Feierabendwhisky, dafür ist er einfach zu schade.
