Profile: What Makes Laphroaig Quarter Cask Special
This Laphroaig first matured in traditional oak casks, then in selected smaller “quarter casks”. Due to the smaller cask size, the whisky has about 30% more contact with the wood than is usual in larger casks. The result is a velvety sweetness followed by the intense peatiness typical of Laphroaig. The sample makes it easy to get to know.
Tasting Notes: What Laphroaig Quarter Cask Tastes Like
- Nose: Plenty of toffee and nutty aromas, plus tones of rum and juicy raisins – a little vanilla
- Palate: Intense sweetness at first, very spicy and warming, smoke, iodine and peat – sweet syrup in the background
- Finish: Medium-length finish, surprisingly fruity with notes of caramelised sugar and cigar smoke
