Zaya
Originally produced in Guatemala by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala - the same company behind the well-known Zacapa rum - the Zaya brand was first trademarked in 2000. When Diageo entered a distribution partnership with the Guatemalan producer in 2008, favouring Zacapa above all, Zaya was left at a disadvantage: both brands competed for the same limited stocks of aged rum. The solution was found on the other side of the Caribbean - Zaya has since been produced by Trinidad Distillers Ltd. on Trinidad, within the same production complex as the renowned Angostura rum. The Gran Reserva is aged using the solera method for up to 16 years and belongs to the spirits portfolio of Infinium Spirits.

Why is Zaya no longer made in Guatemala?
When Diageo entered a distribution partnership with Zaya and Zacapa's Guatemalan producer in 2008, Zacapa was favoured above all - yet both brands competed for the same limited stocks of aged rum. Production subsequently moved to Trinidad Distillers Ltd. on Trinidad, where Zaya is still made today within the same production complex as Angostura.
What does "Gran Reserva" mean for Zaya?
The name refers to ageing using the solera method, in which barrels of different ages are blended together - a technique originally from sherry and brandy production that produces a particularly smooth, consistent character.
Flavour profile
Taste: Soft and sweet with caramel, vanilla and a subtle oak spice, underpinned by a gentle roasted note.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks as a nightcap; its sweetness also makes it well suited to rum cocktails that need little extra sugar.
Available as the classic 0.7l bottle: Zaya Gran Reserva.
