Rum from Barbados
A single property deed dated February 1703 makes Mount Gay in Barbados the world's oldest commercial rum brand - it already documents a still house on the then Mount Gilboa estate. Sir John Gay Alleyne later managed the plantation for owner John Sober, and in gratitude for his service the estate was renamed Mount Gay in his honour. To this day, the distillery is located in the northernmost parish of Saint Lucy and uses water filtered through the island's coral bedrock - fittingly, since Barbados itself is considered by many historians to be the true birthplace of rum, where spirits were first systematically distilled from sugar cane byproducts in the 17th century.
