Rum from Venezuela
In 1959, the company Licorerías Unidas S.A. (LUSA) - majority-owned by Seagram's International - founded a distillery in Venezuela; the brand name Diplomático followed three decades later, in 1989, named after Venezuelan businessman Don Juan Nieto Meléndez, known as "Don Juancho", whose portrait still adorns the labels today. After several changes of ownership - Diageo acquired parent company Seagram in 2001 but sold the Venezuelan production facilities just a year later - a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs acquired the operation in 2002, founding what is today the wholly Venezuelan-owned Destilerías Unidas, S.A. In Germany, the brand has carried the name Botucal instead since 2012 for trademark reasons - following a legal dispute with Aldi over the term "Diplomat".

Why is the rum called Botucal instead of Diplomático in Germany?
In 2012, discount retailer Aldi claimed trademark rights to the term "Diplomat" - to avoid legal disputes, the alternative brand name Botucal was introduced in Germany, while the contents remain identical.
Who was "Don Juancho"?
Don Juan Nieto Meléndez was a Venezuelan businessman whose portrait was printed on the label when the Diplomático brand name launched in 1989 and still adorns it today.
