Whether a whisky feels mild or bold depends on an interplay of several factors - the distillery character, the alcohol content and, not least, the maturation time, since a whisky generally becomes rounder and softer the longer it rests in the cask. Anyone looking for particularly accessible, mild whiskies will find plenty in the Speyside region: Aberlour, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich rank among Scotland's softest representatives. The Highlands also offer gentle alternatives with Aberfeldy, Dalwhinnie, Tomatin, Glengoyne and Glenmorangie, while the Lowland classics Auchentoshan and Glenkinchie gain extra smoothness from triple distillation. Even smoky styles can be interpreted mildly - Lagavulin and Bowmore show how peat smoke and gentleness can go hand in hand.

Why are Lowland whiskies often perceived as especially mild?
Classic Lowland distilleries like Auchentoshan triple-distil instead of double-distilling - each additional distillation pass makes the whisky lighter and more approachable in flavour.
Does age really affect how mild a whisky is?
Yes - as maturation time in the cask increases, sharper flavours are softened and replaced by rounder, more complex cask notes. Bottlings aged 15 years or more are therefore considered especially gentle.
