Dictador
In 1751, the Spaniard Severo Arango y Ferro arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, sent by the Spanish crown to oversee trade with the American colonies - his considerable power soon earned him the nickname "Dictador". More than 160 years later, in 1913, his descendant Don Julio Arango y Parra founded the Destilería Colombiana, honouring the memory of his powerful ancestor. When Colombian law made operations in Cartagena impossible, the distillery moved in 1951 to the quiet town of Pororo in the Cesar department, where small batches of rum, some aged for decades, are still produced today - now under the leadership of Hernán Parra, grandson of the company's founder.

Who was the real "Dictador"?
Severo Arango y Ferro, a Spanish official who arrived in Cartagena in 1751 to oversee colonial trade - his considerable power earned him the nickname "Dictador", which his descendants later chose as the brand name for their rum.
Why did the distillery move in 1951?
Colombian law made it impossible to continue operating the original site in Cartagena, so the Destilería Colombiana moved to Pororo in the Cesar department in 1951, where production continues to this day.
