Portrait: What makes the 21 year old - Pride of the Hebrides - 1st-fill Bourbon Barrels - Thompson Bros. special

21 years is a long time. In that span, children grow into adults, cars become vintage classics, and certain whisky casks turn into genuine rarities.

On the Scottish island of Jura, time has been put to good use to mature a truly exceptional single malt: the 21-year-old Jura "Pride of the Hebrides," bottled by the independent whisky experts, the Thompson Bros.

This whisky hails from the Isle of Jura, located off the west coast of Scotland—specifically within the Inner Hebrides. The island is quite remote and boasts a unique characteristic: it is home to far more red deer than humans. If you value peace and quiet, Jura might just be the perfect place for you. The distillery, which shares the island's name, traces its history back to 1810. After a long period of inactivity, it was rebuilt in the 1960s and has since become a defining feature of the small island’s whisky tradition.

For this special release, the Thompson Bros. have focused on the distillery’s peated style. This is particularly noteworthy, as Jura is not exclusively known for its smoky whiskies.

This 21-year-old single malt spent two full decades plus an additional year maturing in first-fill bourbon barrels—a remarkable maturation period during which there was clearly no need to rush. The Thompson Bros. are Phil and Simon Thompson from the Scottish town of Dornoch. The brothers have made a name for themselves as independent bottlers, renowned for tracking down exceptional casks and releasing them in small batches. With their "Pride of the Hebrides" series, they showcase select whiskies from the Scottish islands in fitting style.

This Jura was bottled at a robust 52.7% ABV, without chill-filtration or the addition of coloring. It is a genuine piece of Scottish island history—one that impresses with far more than just its 21 years of maturation. And if anyone ever asks whether patience pays off, this Jura offers a rather compelling argument that it certainly does.
