Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix (Riise) Rum Cream Caramel & Sea Salt special

Caramel, sea salt, cream, and Caribbean rum—it sounds like a truly international affair. With Old St. Croix Rum Cream Caramel & Sea Salt, several worlds do indeed come together. And surprisingly, you need neither a passport nor a visa to experience it.

The roots of Old St. Croix date back to the 19th century and to Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist, adventurer, and entrepreneur. In 1838, Riise opened his pharmacy on St. Thomas, in what were then the Danish West Indies. Alongside pharmaceuticals, he soon turned his attention to alcoholic products and began developing spirits.

The neighboring island of St. Croix played a special role in this endeavor. The island was once a major center for sugarcane cultivation and sugar production in the Danish West Indies. Molasses—a byproduct of sugar production—served as the foundation for making rum. This Caribbean tradition ultimately gave rise to the name Old St. Croix, under which Riise made his spirits internationally renowned.

Today, Old St. Croix carries on this historic legacy—albeit with a modern twist. For the Cream Caramel & Sea Salt variety, aged spirits from the Caribbean and Central America are blended with cream from Irish pasture-raised cows. Caramel and sea salt join the mix, instantly transforming this classic rum story into a truly international family affair. The brand itself boasts a long history; Riise’s spirits were being exported beyond the Caribbean and winning international awards as early as the 19th century. In 1893, Old St. Croix won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Chicago—meaning the rum had international ambitions long before airports even existed. Today, Old St. Croix represents a blend of Caribbean origins, historic rum traditions, and modern interpretations. The Cream Caramel & Sea Salt variety demonstrates that tradition certainly leaves room for new ideas. In short: Danish rum history, Caribbean roots, Irish cream, and a touch of modern dessert culture—the only way to get more international in a glass is with a diplomatic passport.
