Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix (Riise) Rum Cream Original special

Caribbean rum and Irish cream? At first, it sounds like quite an international conference—fortunately, without the PowerPoint presentations and name tags. Instead, Old St. Croix Rum Cream Original brings together two worlds that fit together surprisingly well in a single bottle.

The story behind it dates back to Albert Heinrich Riise, the Danish pharmacist and adventurer who was active in the then-Danish West Indies during the 19th century.

In 1838, Riise opened his pharmacy on St. Thomas; alongside pharmaceuticals, he also engaged in the production of rum, liqueurs, and bitters. His work eventually gave rise to a brand that made Danish West Indian rum famous far beyond the islands themselves.

The name Old St. Croix pays homage to the island of the same name, which played a pivotal role in sugarcane cultivation and sugar production within the Danish West Indies. The molasses resulting from this process was traditionally used to make rum—a link that remains a cornerstone of the brand to this day.

For Rum Cream Original, this Caribbean tradition is combined with a distinctly Irish ingredient: the finest cream from Irish pasture-raised cows. This is blended with aged rums from the Caribbean and Central America, allowing the liqueur to marry the Old St. Croix rum heritage with a generous dash of Irish creaminess.

With an ABV of 17%, Cream Original is intended for relaxed moments rather than competitive drinking feats. Neat over ice, with coffee, alongside dessert, or as an ingredient in a cocktail—there are refreshingly few hard-and-fast rules.

In doing so, this bottle bridges the past and the present: Danish rum history, Caribbean origins, and Irish cream come together in a single bottle.

In short: Riise brought rum from the Caribbean to the world—and today, Old St. Croix gives it a wonderfully creamy accompaniment.
