Instead of a Christmas Edition, there was a Winter Edition. The disappointment was considerable. After all, for many whisky lovers, the Big Peat Christmas Edition has become as much a part of the cold season as Christmas markets, cookies, and that inevitable question: "Do we really have to listen to 'Last Christmas' again?"
But 2026 is different. The Big Peat Christmas Edition is back—and this time, there are several reasons to celebrate. This special edition bears the name "Frau Holle," is released exclusively for Germany, and is limited to just 600 bottles. It is a small batch, so you probably shouldn't count on Santa Claus having another case stashed away in his sleigh.
Big Peat is produced by the Scottish family-owned company Douglas Laing & Co. Founded in 1948, the company has been immersed in the world of Scotch whisky for generations. Big Peat is part of the renowned "Remarkable Regional Malts" range and represents the Scottish island of Islay.
It is not a single malt, but a blended malt. Only Islay single malt whiskies are married together to create Big Peat—even Port Ellen is part of the blend. This is what creates the brand's distinctive character—one that has enjoyed a loyal following for years.
The "Frau Holle" stays true to the classic Big Peat style and is bottled at cask strength. And the name is, of course, a perfect choice: after all, if Frau Holle is vigorously shaking out her bedding, a Christmas edition ought to pack a bit of energy, too.
Incidentally, there is also a new Winter Edition coming in 2026. Yet the Christmas Edition remains something special—not least because it is exclusive to the German market and limited to a run of just 600 bottles.
