Portrait: What makes The Original Islay Rum - Barrel Aged special
Rum from Scotland? At first, it sounds a bit like pairing a kilt with a Hawaiian shirt. Yet, it is precisely this unusual mix that makes The Original Islay Rum - Barrel Aged something truly special.
Since 2022, the Islay Rum Company has been bringing a breath of fresh air to the famous Hebridean island of Islay - a region previously known almost exclusively for its legendary whiskies.
As the island’s first and - to date - only rum distillery, the team looks across the Atlantic, blending traditional Caribbean distillation artistry with Scottish craftsmanship. The result is neither a Caribbean rum on vacation nor a whisky with an identity crisis - but a completely unique spirit.
Production takes place in the historic "Old Lemonade Factory" in the port town of Port Ellen. Where soft drinks were once made, the team now experiments with great passion. Distillation is carried out in a classic copper pot still with a double-retort system, while an exceptionally long 168-hour fermentation lays the foundation for the rum’s character. Craftsmanship, small batches, and meticulous attention to detail are the top priorities.
The barrel-aged rum derives its distinctive connection to its home from maturation in oak casks that previously held heavily peated Islay single malt whisky. In this way, every bottle unites the island’s centuries-old whisky tradition with a spirit that no one would have previously expected to find on Islay.
The surroundings play a role, too. The harsh climate, salty sea air, and proximity to the Atlantic accompany the rum throughout its maturation, making it a true child of the Hebrides. With a limited run of just 3,000 bottles, this bottling remains pleasingly exclusive.
The Original Islay Rum - Barrel Aged impressively demonstrates that great ideas sometimes emerge where no one expects them. And who would have thought that a new chapter in the history of rum would be written on the "Queen of the Hebrides," of all places?
