Profile: What makes the Bunnahabhain 15 year old An Cuan Garbh No. 1 - The Westering Home Collection 2026 special

Sometimes a glance at the coast is enough to understand where a whisky gets its personality. The “Bunnahabhain 15 year old An Cuan Garbh No. 1” from the Westering Home Collection 2026 is such a candidate - one that seems to have listened to the wind for a few years and thought to itself: “I’ll take this with me.”
The Bunnahabhain distillery is located in a rather secluded spot on the northeast coast of the Isle of Islay. Founded in 1881, it was for a long time something of a well-kept secret – probably because people used to arrive by boat rather than by car.
While many Islay whiskies are known for their robust peatiness, Bunnahabhain traditionally takes a more tranquil approach. Not unassuming, but with more coastal views than campfire romance. The name "An Cuan Garbh" means something like "the rough sea."
It sounds dramatic, but is really just the polite Scottish way of saying, "It's quite windy here." This very origin shapes the character of the bottling – without it having to be loud. With 15 years of maturation, this single malt has had ample opportunity to develop. Initially matured in classic oak Casks, it then received a finish in former white port wine casks. It's a bit like taking a stylish break after a long walk along the coast – same character, but with an added touch of refinement.
Bottled at a robust 51.6% ABV, it also exudes enough confidence without seeming pretentious. The presentation remains typically Nordic and elegant: clear, understated, and with just enough detail to make it clear that nothing has been left to chance. In short: an island whisky that doesn't need to be loud to make an impression.
More like the kind of person who sits quietly by the window, gazing at the sea – knowing full well that they are the most interesting person in the room.
