Portrait: What makes the Nc'nean Huntress 2026 Malted Teacake special?

There are whiskies that simply sit on the shelf. And then there's the Nc'nean Huntress 2026 Malted Teacake – it seems as if it had briefly asked for approval before leaving the shelf. It is produced at the young, but surprisingly self-assured Nc’nean Distillery in the Scottish Highlands.
There, they are convinced that whisky doesn't necessarily have to come from a dusty time capsule, but can also be quite modern, sustainable, and pleasantly idiosyncratic. You could say: classic tradition meets "We're doing things differently – but with style." The Huntress series is something like the distillery's creative diary.
Each edition tries something that you would only find mentioned in the margins of classic whisky textbooks, perhaps with a skeptical footnote.
For the 2026 edition, charmingly named "Malted Teacake," special Belgian ale yeast was used, among other things - which sounds like someone decided to introduce beer and whisky to each other in a very polite way. The maturation took place in a rather precise cask mix: STR wine casks, ex-bourbon barrels, and a small proportion of Oloroso sherry casks.
Sounds a bit like an international shared-living project where, surprisingly, everyone involved has remained cooperative. Nc'nean also stays true to its visual identity: the bottles are made from recycled glass, are dark, and feature botanical illustrations.
Ferns, blossoms, nature – practically a whisky that wants to look like it's about to go for a walk right after being poured. And then there's the philosophy: sustainable production, a sustainable approach, no unnecessary frills.
Even the 48.5% alcohol content doesn't come across as arrogant, but rather like a well-placed exclamation mark at the end of a thoughtful sentence. In short: this whisky isn't trying to look old. It's trying to be right. And he succeeds quite convincingly – in a pleasantly understated, slightly rebellious way.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Nc'nean Huntress 2026 Malted Teacake tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, an inviting bouquet of oven-baked pastries and ripe fruit is revealed. Particularly prominent are dense aromas of sweet fig jam, which lend the fragrance a warm, almost nostalgic depth. Overall, the interplay of aromas is creamy and harmonious, with distinct buttery notes.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whisky is soft and creamy with an almost buttery texture. Impressions of warm cake and buttered toast initially dominate, before a fine, subtle minerality becomes apparent. Fruity nuances combine with a gentle spiciness to create a well-balanced overall impression.
  • Finish: The finish is long and intensely aromatic. Fruity accents and subtle spice linger, leaving a harmonious, slightly warming impression. The aromatic power remains present until the very end.
