Portrait: What makes The Hearach 6 year old Single 1st-fill Bourbon Cask #1932 special
There are whiskies that exude a certain serenity. And then there's the Hearach 6 Year Old 1st-fill Bourbon Cask #1932, which acts as if it has personally incorporated the entire Isle of Harris into its biography - including peat, wind, rain, and a touch of "do-it-yourself malt."
Together with the team in Tarbert - led by Master Blender Shona MacLeod, who could probably even make fog stand in neat rows - a very special cask was selected: A first-fill Heaven Hill ex-bourbon barrel, filled on November 12, 2018. And because they don't do things half-heartedly at Harris, they didn't use the usual malt with 12-16 ppm. No, this had to be something with more personality. Something that says, "I'm here, and I mean business." So they went with malt peated with original Harris peat to 40-44 ppm. When a whisky has this much character, the question of whether to bring it up to drinking strength doesn't even arise. Of course not! This malt comes at 58.9% ABV. Anyone that confident gets cask strength. Full stop.
It was matured in the Ardhasaig Warehouse, where casks probably know more about the weather than the locals themselves. After almost six years, the time had finally come: On September 11, 2025, Cask #1932 was finally bottled – yielding a mere 248 bottles. In whisky terms, that's about the equivalent of three raindrops in a Harris winter.
And so, Vibrant Stills now present their first Hearach – one that doesn't pretend, doesn't hold back, and would probably even tell the North Atlantic: "Go ahead and make waves, I'll handle it."
In short: A single malt with attitude, heart, and a touch of island flair. And whoever manages to snag one of the 248 bottles can rejoice - or at least pretend they were involved in the selection process in Tarbert. Slàinte!

Tasting Notes: This is how The Hearach 6 year old Single 1st-fill Bourbon Cask #1932 tastes like
- Nose: A very fruity opening with aromas of pear, flambéed banana, and baked apple. A subtle hint of peat underlies this, gently embracing the sweet fruits.
- Palate: Smoke and peat are immediately and distinctly present. Then fruity accents emerge – pear, gooseberry, and white grapes. Maritime, salty notes give the overall impression additional depth and character.
- Finish: Long, with plenty of vanilla and a pleasantly warm smoke that slowly fades away.
