Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix XO 175 years Anniversary Reserve special
When a pharmacist opens his doors on a small Caribbean island in 1838, he probably didn't expect that 175 years later his name would end up on a bottle that would impress even royalty. But Albert Heinrich Riise was no ordinary pharmacist – he was a visionary Dane with a passion for distillation, exotic raw materials, and, evidently, a good mood.
Over the decades, his original "Apothecary Hall" on St. Thomas – then part of the Danish West Indies – has become a legend in liquid form: The A.H. Riise brand. Today, it operates under the name Old St. Croix, which sounds just as stylish, but helps you avoid mispronouncing "Riise" every five minutes.
For its 175th anniversary, the master distiller has gone all out and created a truly impressive XO Reserve – naturally matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, as befits a spirit with the word "Reserve" in its name. We're not talking about just any rum, but a liquid monument. A blend so deeply rooted in history that you'd almost want to place a history book next to it. Or at least a globe.
Whether as a gift, to broaden your horizons, or to stylishly toast life's big and small successes – this anniversary rum is more than just a spirit. It's a statement. A "Cheers" with historical depth.
And honestly: If 175 years taste so good, how do we celebrate 200?
Tasting Notes: This is how the Old St. Croix XO 175 years Anniversary Reserve tastes like
- Nose: The first impression is surprisingly fresh – cool mint opens the olfactory play and provides an invigorating opening. Behind this, deeper, warmer aromas of toffee and fine leather unfold, lending structure and maturity to the bouquet. With some time in the glass, subtle citrus aromas join in, lending the overall picture an elegant lightness.
- Palate: The complexity of the bottling is evident on the palate – eucalyptus provides a fresh, almost ethereal note before the sweet and spicy notes unfold. A particularly present impression of caramelized plum cake is dark, fruity, and with a pleasant depth. A subtle hint of white tea resonates in the background, accentuated by a citrusy, slightly bitter note of bergamot oil – an elegant reminiscence of an Earl Grey.
- Finish: Leather and bergamot combine in the finish to create a soft, harmonious ending. The subtle bitterness of the bergamot remains pleasantly present and is rounded off by the warm, supple leather – a finish that demonstrates both depth and finesse.
