Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy - The Frigate Jylland special
Some bottles tell stories - this one an entire seafaring saga. The Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy - The Frigate Jylland is a liquid homage to the time when Denmark was still a serious player in the international rum trade - and the ships were bigger than the warehouses.
Welcome to the 19th century, when Danish frigates like the Jylland not only proudly sailed the world's oceans, but also brought back the best of the Caribbean - in this case: rum. More precisely: rum from the former Danish West Indies, where a certain pharmacist named Albert Heinrich Riise not only mixed medicines but also bottled rum, which made the rounds faster than any painkiller.
The Frigate Jylland was the last sailing ship to bring rum to Denmark for A.H. Riise – today it lies anchored as a museum ship in Ebeltoft (not Copenhagen, but still worth a visit). The rum is therefore not just a tribute to a ship, but to an entire era: colonial trade, naval uniforms, seafaring tales – and the beginnings of what today goes by the name Old St. Croix.
This bottling celebrates the glorious combination of rum, seafaring, and Danish history – all without the seasickness. So if you fancy taking a historic course with your next glass: Ship ahoy, the Frigate Jylland is ready.
