Portrait: What makes the Powers Three Swallow special
If Irish whiskey had a personality, then Powers would be the slightly disheveled, yet charming guy at the bar, telling stories from the 19th century - in such a way that you suddenly want to to saddle up.
Powers is no newcomer to the whiskey game. The brand was founded by John Power in Dublin in 1791, at a time when Napoleon was still thinking about redecorating Europe. And while many whiskey houses have come and gone over the centuries (usually with dramatic corkscrews), Powers has survived - with style, substance, and a fair amount of Irish self-confidence.
The name Three Swallow initially sounds like a somewhat wild student bet, but it's actually a homage to the brand's earlier travel bottles: These contained exactly three "swallows" – just the right amount for a hearty swig on horseback before riding through rain, wind, and the Irish wilderness again. So you could say: Powers was "on the go" before it was cool.
The fine spirit is now produced at the Midleton Distillery in Cork – a true whiskey capital of Ireland. They continue to distill according to the motto: no frills, but plenty of character.
Powers Three Swallow is therefore more than just a whiskey. It's a short, fluid history lesson - only without the boring teachers, but with an Irish accent and a wink.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Powers Three Swallow tastes like
- Nose: Fresh and lively with a pleasant honey sweetness. Also aromas of ripe pears, green apples, and a hint of citrus. Toasted oak, malt, and a subtle hint of spice are noticeable in the background – typical of pot-still distillation. An elegant aroma with an Irish temperament.
- Palate: Soft and round with a beautiful balance between sweetness and spice. Caramel and vanilla meet spicy cereal notes, accompanied by nutmeg, a touch of white pepper, and toasted wood. The pot-still components bring an oily texture and depth – not lightweight, but not too heavy either.
- Finish: Medium to long with a drying spice. Oak, a hint of leather, and dried fruit linger. Gentle but present – a finish that doesn't close the door behind it, but rather bids a brief farewell.
