Portrait: What makes the Mannochmore 2014 100 Proof Edition #51 Signatory Vintage special
Mannochmore? Never heard of it? No wonder. This Speyside distillery is as rare as the Scottish summer - especially as a single malt. All the more wonderful when Signatory Vintage pulls a barrel (or several) of it out of the shadows and catapults it into the 100 Proof Edition.
And what an edition! 57.1% vol., as always at 100 Proof – officially strong enough to ignite gunpowder, historically speaking. Don't worry, nothing will explode here (except maybe your taste buds).
The Mannochmore 2014/2025 was allowed to mature for a full eleven years – not in any standard casks, but in quarter casks and hogsheads that had previously been filled with sweet Pedro Ximénez Sherry. That not only sounds delicious, but also like a cask fitness program: small casks, big impact.
The combination of compact maturation space and sherry residue brings a lot of character – dates, raisins, and a hint of spicy oak. But hey, we're not talking about taste today.
What we can say: This Mannochmore is the liquid counter-argument to the assumption that "strong" always has to mean "edgy." And all this at a price that makes you wonder if Signatory accidentally misplaced the comma.
In short: whoever discovers it shouldn't underestimate it. Small in name, big in glass.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Mannochmore 2014 100 Proof Edition #51 Signatory Vintage tastes like
- Nose: Sweet sherry aromas immediately hit the nose - raisins, dates and figs set the tone - behind this are aromas of ripe red fruits, accompanied by vanilla, honey and a hint of oak - a light freshness reminiscent of orange zest and a splash of grape juice - complex and inviting
- Palate: Oily and full-bodied with a strong, sweet and spicy opening - the PX pre-allocation shows intense dried fruits, syrup and a hint of chocolate - fruity notes provide balance, accompanied by fine oak spice, a touch of cinnamon and a subtle nuttiness - despite 57.1% vol. Well-integrated alcohol - strong, but not overwhelming
- Finish: long and pleasantly warming - the sweetness remains present, accompanied by gentle tannins, dark cocoa powder, and a slight dryness - a hint of oak and red fruits fade slowly and elegantly
