The Glentauchers 16 Year Old Edition #11 from Signatory Vintage is one of those. No frills, no artificial color, no chill filtration - just plenty of character and a certain "I'm not like the others" attitude.
Made in Speyside, from a distillery that whisky nerd Jim Murray included in his "Top Five" - and that's saying something. Glentauchers is usually more of a quiet hero in the background: it gives Ballantine's its body and flair without pushing itself into the foreground. But here? Here, it finally plays solo - and at 16 years of age, in First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts. That's a bit like sending an introvert to a spa with mahogany furniture and dried fruit for 16 years. Result: deeply relaxed, but with a real inner strength.
At 57.1% vol., it not only packs a punch in terms of flavor, but also comes at a rather charming price - true to the motto of the 100 Proof Edition: a lot of whisky for your money, little drama in your wallet.
In short: Anyone who has overlooked Glentauchers so far should take a closer look. And be happy that exceptional doesn't necessarily mean unaffordable here.
