Portrait: What makes the Planteray Original Dark special

The Planteray Original Dark Barbados & Jamaica is an expressive rum that combines two important rum nations in one bottling. The blend combines 1-3 year-old rum qualities from Barbados, produced in the renowned West Indies Rum Distillery, with 10-15 year-old high ester rums from Jamaica from the traditional Long Pond Distillery.

The base is molasses, which is fermented for 3-4 days in Barbados and even for two weeks in Jamaica - a clear indication of the intense character of the Jamaican component. Distillation takes place in Barbados in twin column stills and a historic Batson pot still from 1850, while the Jamaican rums are distilled exclusively in pot stills.

After blending, the rum matures again for 3-6 months in small used Ferrand Casks made of French oak in the cool cellars of Château de Bonbonnet in the Cognac region. This continental maturation provides additional depth and balance.

With a moderate dosage of 15 g/l, the Planteray Original Dark is finely rounded off. Its dark orange color indicates maturity and intensity – a complex rum with artisanal quality and international style.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Planteray Original Dark tastes like

  • Nose: The bouquet opens fruity and spicy, with a well-balanced blend of black peppercorns, cloves, and cinnamon. Baked cherries and prunes add a pleasant depth and fruitiness to the aroma. With time in the glass, additional aromas of black tea and fine wood develop, giving the rum an elegant, slightly bitter component
  • Palate: On the palate, the rum begins with a pleasantly fruity note, with light grapes and dried pineapple in particular providing a juicy freshness. As the finish progresses, the character becomes drier and spicier, with vanilla and a distinctive peppery note coming to the fore. The balance between sweetness, spice, and fruit is always maintained
  • Finish: The finish is spicy-sweet and charming, with a lingering aftertaste of warm spices and ripe fruit. A subtle dryness provides structure and harmoniously rounds off the overall impression
