Anyone who loves smoky whiskies can hardly ignore the cult brand with the skull. Everyone else: better keep their distance. Because this Islay single malt brings a lot of peat power to the glass - intense, wild, and unmistakable.
And the best part: Despite its character, it remains reasonably priced.
Now, in spring 2025, there's finally a new addition – with an age statement. After a long hiatus (and only for a short time), Ian Macleod is expanding the Smokehead series with a special Bottling: the Smokehead 15 Years. This brings the brand's typical smokiness in a mature, nuanced version. Powerful, complex, and aromatic.
What awaits you in the glass?
Dense campfire smoke, infused with herbs like rosemary and thyme. Peat notes meet fresh citrus fruits and sweet vanilla. The finish: long-lasting, with lemon zest, salty sea spray—and, of course, a generous portion of smoke.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Smokehead 15 year old tastes like
- Nose: the first impression is of dense campfire smoke, immediately reminiscent of cold evenings by the fire. This is accompanied by spicy herbal aromas, especially rosemary and thyme, which lend the fragrance aromatic depth. This is joined by a fine peat aroma and fresh citrus fruits, which give the overall impression of lively freshness. Gentle vanilla harmoniously rounds off the bouquet
- Palate: on the palate, the Smokehead 15 Year Old is powerful and balanced. The characteristic peat smoke is clearly in the foreground, but is elegantly accompanied by citrus notes that add a fresh, almost tangy component. The herbal aromas from the nose continue and provide a spicy nuance. Vanilla lends the taste a pleasant sweetness and skillfully softens the smoky intensity
- Finish: the finish is exceptionally long and intense - fresh lemon remains present, accompanied by a salty sea breeze - a clear indication of the Islay origins - the smoke fades slowly and lingers on the palate as a warming, peaty note
