Portrait: What makes the Edradour 11 year old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1002 makes a difference.
When whisky suddenly flirts with wine, it can either go wrong - or become a minor sensation. In the case of the Edradour 11 Year Old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1002, the latter is the case: a Highland malt that has teamed up with a South Tyrolean white wine cask - and comes off suspiciously well.
Edradour, affectionately known as "Scotland's Little Gem," is picturesquely tucked away in the Highlands, east of Pitlochry. Small, charming, and somewhat idiosyncratic - and precisely for that reason, so popular. Since being taken over by Andrew Symington (yes, the Symington of Signatory) in 2002, the distillery has been steeped in craftsmanship, old machinery, and an even older whisky spirit. Those who like large industrial facilities have come to the wrong place - but those seeking character have come to the right place.
Now for the new twist: Together with the renowned St. Michael-Eppan winery from South Tyrol, selected white wine barrels from the premium Sanct Valentin series have been repurposed - but in the best possible way! Where Sauvignon Blanc usually shines with minerality, freshness, and elegance, a single malt was now allowed to make its mark.
Cask #1002, distilled in April 2012 and bottled in December 2023, is no ordinary whisky. It is a whisky with an international background, Italian flair, and a Scottish soul. A culinary cultural exchange in a cask, a Highlander on an educational journey through the vineyards of South Tyrol, so to speak.
And the result? Let's stick to the motto: Don't mix wine and whisky - unless you really, really know what you're doing. Spoiler: Edradour knew it.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour 11 year old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1002 tastes like
- Nose: Lively, unusual - and immediately exciting - a fruity freshness opens the fragrance: green apples, white grapes, lime zest - behind this are floral aromas, a hint of herbal meadow and moist minerality - almost like a walk through a South Tyrolean vineyard after the rain - gentle honey sweetness and a light vanilla note from the wood charmingly round off the bouquet
- Palate: Creamy, elegant and yet surprisingly complex - the fresh fruit notes of the Sauvignon wine (gooseberry, citrus, peach) meet the typical depth by Edradour: Maltiness, fine spice, subtle oak – a hint of grapefruit provides a light bitterness, perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the wine cask – everything intertwines without one component overpowering the other – a true cask finish with sensitivity
- Finish: Medium to long, mineral and dry-fruity. White grapes and lemon peel linger, along with a hint of damp stone, light wood, and a subtle herbal note – fresh and elegant to the finish – almost like a white wine with a whiskey accent
