Portrait: What makes the Edradour 11 year old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1001 makes all the difference.
When a Highland whisky meets South Tyrolean Sauvignon, it initially sounds like the script for a somewhat offbeat romance - but the Edradour 11 Year Old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1001 shows: Sometimes the barrel cellar writes the best love stories.
The small distillery Edradour, hidden in the rolling hills east of Pitlochry, is a real whisky insider tip - or rather: it was, until Andrew Symington took over the helm in 2002. Since then, "Scotland's Little Gem" has grown considerably, delighting fans worldwide with characterful, artisanally produced malts. Here, they still work with equipment older than many whisky drinkers – charmingly nostalgic and pleasantly unindustrial.
For the 2024 winter lineup, they've come up with something very special: a collaboration with the St. Michael-Eppan winery from South Tyrol – known for elegant white wines with plenty of character. More specifically, from their prestigious Sanct Valentin range, where cellar master Hans Terzer has been selecting only the crème de la grape for 40 years.
And this Edradour was aged in just such a first-fill Sauvignon Blanc cask in April 2012 – and remained there for a full 11 years. Cask #1001, the identical whisky twin of #1002, is not a finish, but a true white wine of full maturity. No compromise, but cask love at first drop.
The result? A Scottish traditionalist with an Italian accent – or in other words: Highland charm meets Dolce Vita in the glass.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour 11 year old 1st-fill Sauvignon Cask #1001 tastes like
- Nose: A fresh, fragrant opening with aromas of green apple peel, citrus fruits, and white grapes - behind this, floral nuances unfold, a hint of lemon balm, and fine herbal spice - the mineral freshness of the Sauvignon Cask is clearly noticeable - like a breeze over a South Tyrolean vineyard - accompanied by delicate honey and vanilla tones from the oak Cask
- Palate: Slightly oily and at the same time tangy and fresh - tropical fruits such as pineapple and grapefruit meet green gooseberries, Accompanied by fine oak spice - the minerality of the wine barrel runs like a common thread through the flavor, complemented by a hint of white pepper and a touch of herbal tea blend - harmonious, balanced, and with a charming interplay of sweetness and freshness
- Finish: Medium to long, dry, and elegant - citrus notes fade away slowly, accompanied by gentle oak, a hint of vanilla, and a pleasant fruitiness. The mineral freshness remains present until the end - a clean, clear finish with character
